The Peninsula, Hunts Point

Spaceworks is a part of the community-supported redevelopment project The Peninsula, an opportunity to support artists living and working in the Hunts Point neighborhood of the Bronx.

Project Overview

NYCEDC is working alongside the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) to redevelop the former Spofford Juvenile Detention Center into a mixed-use, live/work campus known as The Peninsula. Within the development, Spaceworks will operate subsidized creative workspace including performing arts rehearsal space.

Community Engagement

Beginning in December 2014, NYCEDC performed extensive outreach with local elected officials, key local stakeholders, and local residents to discuss the priorities for the site. Some of the neighborhood stakeholders included Bronx Community Board 2, BronxWorks, the Hunts Point Alliance for Children, City Year, Youth Ministries for Peace and Justice, Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education, Sustainable South Bronx, and many others.

Project Status

Construction on the first phase is expected to wrap in 2021, phase two is supposed to be complete in 2022, and the entire five building project (four residential and one industrial) is scheduled to finish in 2024.
