We leverage resources and relationships within the public and private sectors to increase space access for New Yorkers.
While the core of the model involves renovating City-owned real estate assets using NYC Capital Funds, we also develop projects in private buildings utilizing a variety of public and private development sources.
We preserve and protect the multifaceted cultures of our city so that people can make art in place. View our Projects in Development>>
Each Spaceworks site has a unique operating model based on the needs of local artists and cultural workers.
Case Study: OMNI/Park Ave Green
After 2.5 years of engaging artists and cultural workers in the Bronx, Spaceworks was approached by OMNI, a developer of affordable housing, to program and operate one of their ground floor spaces in the South Bronx. We are currently partnering with Bronx-based artists and organizations to co-create an operational model to best serve the long term sustainability of this space.
Caring for Creatives
We aim to foster the economic wellbeing of creative communities by providing subsidized workspace and opportunities for greater sustainability.
Through the Creative Economic Initiative (CEI), we provide technical assistance toward greater economic and financial viability for creatives growing their business endeavors. For example, the Emergent Studio program offers heavily subsidized space to visual artists and small organizations who have never had a studio or a residency.
Squad is a leadership network bringing the Spaceworks community closer together to cultivate inclusive, member-led working environments. Squad members receive heavily subsidized space for their participation.
