The leader of this quintet, Marta Sanchez, is a Madrid born piano player living in New York for the last 7 years. She moved there in 2011 thanks to a Fulbright scholarship to study for a Master’s in Jazz Piano Performance at New York University.
Marta created her quintet soon after moving to the big apple, and since then the quintet has released two CDs: “Partenika” (2015) and “Danza Imposible” (2017), both with the Spanish label Fresh Sound.
Both “Partenika” and “Danza Imposible” have received a lot of praise from the press. “Partenika” got excellent reviews from The New York Times, Downbeat, All Music, All About Jazz, and many others. Not only that, but the recording was selected by the New York Times as one of the best 10 recordings of 2015, in all genres, and it was also included among the Best Jazz Recordings of the year by the Jazz Journalist Association, Downbeat and All Music. The next album from the quintet, “Danza Imposible,” was reviewed and highly praised at the famous radio program Fresh Air, it also got 4 stars from Downbeat, an excellent review in the New York Times and on Nate Chinen’s radio program at WBGO. “Danza Imposible” was also included in several best of 2017 lists.
Marta’s music has also been the subject of articles at publications like Jazziz and the New York Times, who named the pianist and composer as an example in an article about the good year of music made by women.
Combining elements of rock, pop, jazz, classical and experimental music, Marta‘s tunes are rhythmically complex but strongly melodic. In the words of Grammy nominee Alan Ferber: “It’s music that tells stories by integrating folk elements with the harmonic sophistication and spontaneity of jazz.”Categories
