BODY POETRY is a workshop series exploring connections between poetry and the body.

Created by El Puente CADRE Teaching Artist Janelle "Nellie" Young as part of her Dance Lit Residency, this project invited adults and youth to participate in weekly workshops taught by Janelle at Spaceworks @ Williamsburgh Library.

In each workshop, students were encouraged to read and explicate a piece of poetry or writing from which they created choreography. Students were exposed to many dance forms including West African dance, West Indian Dance, Bhangra, Modern, Kathak, Jazz, Ballet, Hip Hop and Lyrical.

The series culminated in a public showcase of the student's work at Spaceworks @ Williamsburgh Library.

Dance Lit is operated by Spaceworks and El Puente CADRE and is made possible through a partnership with Brooklyn Public Library and support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
