Discipline: Drawing & Painting
Based In: NYC
Website: Victoria Morales
Born in 1961, Victoria Morales is a product of Spanish Harlem, also known as “El Barrio,” and her early upbringing in this ethnically rich neighborhood has informed her life and work ever since. Since she began drawing at the age of nine through her introduction to oil painting at eighteen, the vibrant colors and rhythms that surrounded her growing up became an integral part of her artistic vision, an approach that she further refined as a student at the School of Visual Arts and the Art Students League in New York City.
Morales’s keen sense of color, her flair for sumptuous shapes and deeply emotional graphic landscapes, often evoke the influence of great surrealist expressionist painters like Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dalí and Georgia O’Keeffe. Her very personal, iconic symbols, drawn from her experiences as a New York born Puerto Rican and her early memories from “El Barrio,” offer a fascinating window into her formative relationship with her grandmother, the vibrant Spanish-speaking immigrant community that helped shape her and the dreams of a young woman learning her craft from the great masters during frequent visits to New York’s famed Fifth Avenue museums.
