Discipline: Sculpture

Based In: Brooklyn

Website: Rachel Selekman

My work is influenced by my experiences as an artist and a woman and navigating these roles. Exemplified by “Reveal (Taking Stock 1),” my sculptures are moving in a new direction. Recently I decided to start incorporating all my leftover materials into new work. “Reveal” includes almost all the beads, buttons, and sew-ons from my stockpile (“taking stock” in the title references this approach). This self-imposed directive came about during a self-reflective period and my day-to-day life as a recycler, composter, and upcycler. Moving forward, I will use my stockpile to make visually complex and engaging sculptures.

In my collages, I have been working on a series of small pieces that are a reflection on turning fifty. They’re about a new phase beginning and one ending; sadness and loss versus hope and expectation. They incorporate motifs that have long been part of my oeuvre and new ones, including watch faces and hourglasses. When the “sand” is in the top of the hourglass, it’s full of potential, whereas, when it’s in the bottom, it’s as if time has run out. In addition, the larger-scale “Golden Flow” addresses issues of aging and women’s biological clocks.
