Website: Monica L. Bernal

Monica L. Bernal (American, b. Bogota, Colombia 1986) is an illustrative painter who lives and works in Brooklyn. Bernal creates intimate yet surreal works using oil and water based paints on non-traditional surfaces such as mylar and wood. She incorporates visions of outer space-landscapes combined with a cast of lifeforms within the imaginative setting. Her unique vernacular translates a meditative and energetic fantasy of an unearthly way of life. The raw morphing of what is familiar and what is dreamlike are spatial conundrums.
Like contemporaries such as Shara Hughs or Christian Little, Bernal is giving her viewer a window of early Modernism, clear references to The Fantastic while rooted by the color abstractions in Fauvism. Bernal received her (MFA from Parsons The New School and BA from UC Riverside.) She has recently shown her work at the Kitchen in NYC and Zolla/Lieberman in Chicago, and W Archive.
