Martha Lavery is Artistic Director of NYC based Vector Dance Company. Lavery prefers to take risks in creating new choreography, whether that means blending/bending genres or incorporating other elements such as improvisation or humor to a work. She aims to prioritize both honest, relatable storytelling & full-bodied, athletic movement. She enjoys experimenting with different performance styles and always has a few ideas brewing so stay tuned!

Lavery received a BA in Dance from Hofstra University [Spring 2014], where she was a student of the Honors College and also earned Minors in both Psychology and Film Production. At Hofstra, she performed works by Karla Wolfangle, Amy Marshall, Darrah Carr, Stormy Brandenberger, Nancy Duncan/Bebe Miller, Robin Becker, and Maxine Steinman. Throughout her college career, her choreography was chosen for 4 Department Student Repertory Festivals, as well as the 2014 College Partnership Program showing at Mark Morris Dance Center. During college, she was an active member of MoVoM [Mind Over Vision Over Movement], where she performed and choreographed modern and contemporary works; she choreographed and performed hip-hop pieces for both Danceworks Productions [where she has since been invited back as an alumni choreographer] and Imani Dance Ensemble.

She has performed in the Informal Showings at the American College Dance Festivals [now ACDA] in both 2012 & 2013. In the summer of 2012, she spent a month studying dance in Italy [Toscana Dance Hub, Director Giada Ferrone], where she performed choreography by the late Niles Ford [Urban Dance Collective] at the 2012 Florence Dance Festival, and also performed works by Alfonso Cayetano [Interferencia Danza, Madrid] and Pietro Pireddu [Maktub Noir, Florence].
